A thin-film solar panel is a next-generation solar cell made by depositing thin films of semiconductors on glass, metal, or plastics. These solar cells are favourable because of their minimum material usage and rising efficiency. 

Light and flexible panels for small purpose

The film thickness varies from a few nanometers to tens of micrometre, which is up to 20 times thinner than the conventional Crystalline silicon wafers. This makes thin-film cells flexible and lighter in weight. However, they are less efficient than crystal silicon modules and is employed mainly for domestic purpose such as small home projects, charging small DC batteries, or science projects. There are three common types of thin-film categories, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and gallium free CIS.

Amorphous Silicon(a-Si) panels

Amorphous silicon is traditional thin-film technology. Chemical vapour deposition is used to place a thin layer of silicon onto the glass, plastic, or metal. The chemical absorbs a wide range of spectrum and is non-toxic. The film performs well even in low light but with low efficiency. They are bendable and less susceptible to cracks. However, their primary drawback is their efficiency. These panels are less than half efficient when compared to conventional silicon solar cells. Most a-Si panels have around 7% efficiency.  

Cadmium Telluride(CdTe) panels

CdTe is the most common thin-film solar panel because of its proficiency. CdTe can absorb the shorter wavelength of sunlight, which is easier to convert into electricity. They are more efficient than amorphous silicon panels but far less efficient than conventional silicon cells. These panels can give about 10 to 11% efficiency. The series 6 modules can produce 420W of power while its smaller modules, such as series 4 modules, offer about 100W.

copper gallium indium diselenide or Gallium free CIS

A CIGS cell is made from copper gallium indium diselenide compound sandwiched between two conductive layers. A CIGS panel can give a tough competition to silicon panels in terms of efficiency. With efficiency exceeding 20%, CIGS panels are more environment friendly due to less per cent of cadmium.
