Lower-grade Titanium

Grade-1 Titanium is the softest unalloyed grade of Titanium. It has good resistance to moderately reducing conditions and massive resistance to the strong oxidizing environment even without chloride. It can be used in heat exchangers, chemical equipment, chlorine production, anodes, and desalination. Grade-2 Titanium has moderate strength and excellent cold-forming properties. It shows outstanding welding properties and oxidation and corrosion. Commercially pure grade-3 Titanium is strong and less malleable than grade-1 and grade-2. However, it shows excellent resistance to corrosion under varied environmental conditions. It is used in aerospace and industries requiring moderate strength.

Higher-grade Titanium

Pure grade-4 Titanium has the highest strength of all the pure titanium grades. It is used in industries where high strength titanium is required. Grade-5 Titanium is the most widely used alloy of Titanium. The largest market for grade-5 is in the airline industry. Grade-7 Titanium is similar to grade-2 with a slight chemical difference. It is broadly employed in the chemical treatment and production of electricity. Titanium grade-9 has high-temperature resistance; it can be rolled with its outstanding corrosion resistance ability used in industrial aerospace and sporting equipment.  Grade-23 Titanium has less oxygen, nitrogen, and iron, making them more ductile and better fracture resistance.

Categories of titanium alloys

There are four main categories of titanium alloys; Alpha alloys, near-alpha alloys, alpha and beta alloys, and beta near-Beta alloys. Alpha alloys contain neutral alloying and alpha stabilizers. They are not heated treatable. Near-alpha alloys contain small amounts of beta-phase. Alpha and Beta alloys are metastable, include alpha and beta stabilizers, and can be heat treated. Beta and near beta alloys can be solution preserved and aged to improve strength.
