Sometimes, the lighting available inside the house is not sufficient. A poorly lit living room is neither convenient nor aesthetically pleasing. It has also been proven that a poorly lit room is harmful to the eyes since there is a lack of sufficient lighting to help in seeing things. Hence, there is a need to install additional lighting that adds more life to the living room and gives the living room a sense of grandeur. Ceiling fan lighting kits are installed on the fan and serve an aesthetic purpose of adding beauty to the otherwise dull looking ceiling fans.
CFL vs. LED fan lights
Ceiling fan light bulbs come in the form of CFL and LED lights. CFL lights, also known as Compact Fluorescent lights, are an older bulb model that is reasonably energy efficient, though not as energy efficient as the LED lights. One of the most significant advantages of CFL lights is that they can be recycled quickly and efficiently. However, CFL lights contain mercury, and hence they need to be handled with care. On the other hand, LED lights are the most energy-efficient and produce the brightest light compared to CFL bulbs. However, LED lights are more expensive than CFL bulbs.
Lumens per square foot
Brightness is the next most common consideration. Since ceiling fan lights are not the main lighting inside the living room, their brightness level need not be very high. Moreover, installing very bright lights in the ceiling fan generates more heat inside the fan motor and leads to excess power consumption. Hence, moderately bright lights are sufficient for ceiling fan kits. The brightness level is measured by a scale known as the lumens per square foot. The higher the lumens, the higher the brightness level. For the living room and bedroom, 10 lumens bulbs are sufficient for ceiling fans.
Choosing the correct diameter for lights
As usual, the size of the lights depends mainly on the size of the ceiling fan. Ceiling fans come mostly in two sizes: the 42-inch fan and the 52-inch fan. The 42-inch fans cover a smaller radius, and hence smaller lights are sufficient for these fans. Ideally, a lighting kit having dimensions of 9.01 X 9.06 X 9.25 inches is more than enough for 42-inch fans. Since 52-inch fans cover a larger radius, they require a slightly bigger lighting set, ideally around the dimensions of 13.5 X 13.2 X 11.75 inches.
Dimmable vs. non-dimmable lights
Many prefer to control the amount of light shown at a given point in time. Some prefer brighter lights in the morning and darker lights in the evening. Hence, dimmable LED lights exist in which the light brightness can be controlled. Cheaper non-dimmable lights are also available.
