Finishing Nails Buying Guide

One of the significant aspects of carpentry and woodwork is to hold things together. Holding things together and placing wooden slabs at the right places in the correct proportions is the core philosophy of quality carpentry work.  Carpentry fails when things fall due to a lack of strength. Finishing nails are the metaphorical glue that holds various items together in the right places. Since finishing nails are vital in giving finishing touches to various carpentry projects, they are quintessential to any carpentry work. Multiple varieties of finishing nails exist for many projects.

Choosing the correct nail length

The biggest advantage of finishing nails is its availability in multiple sizes and shapes. However, with such variety comes the difficulty of making the correct nail size choice. Choosing the wrong nail size will result in the nail getting submerged into the wood slab, making it difficult to extract the nail. Hence, as per the popular rule known as the “don’t hit your thumb rule” of choosing nails, the nail must be at least three times longer than the length of the slab in which one plans to hammer the nail. Following this rule prevents nail submersion into the slab.

Nailhead diameter considerations

The nail tip has two parts, namely the head and the tail. The tail is the pointed end hammered into the wall, whereas the head is the thick round part on which hammering is done to insert the said nail into the slab. While the nailhead is available in small and medium diameters, a general rule of thumb is to choose a nail whose nailhead is at least four times the diameter of the cylindrical body of the nail. Choosing the nailhead diameter is a precautionary measure that ensures the hammer does not accidentally hit the thumb while hammering.

Iron vs. stainless steel nails

Most nails in the market are available in both iron and stainless steel varieties. An important factor while choosing nails is sturdiness and resistance to force. When sturdy nails are not chosen, the nails tend to bend and ruin the overall furniture, hanging, or carpentry project. Iron nails are the sturdiest nails but tend to rust faster in humid areas. While stainless steel may not be as sturdy as iron nails, they are entirely immune to rust. Hence, the appropriate considerations need to be made before choosing the nails.

Nail shank considerations

The nail shank is the surface of the nail body. Shank surfaces are available in two main varieties, namely the smooth shank and the rugged shank. Generally, smooth shanks are used to hammer two parts together and for holding purposes. However, rugged shanks are more suitable for hanging and holding purposes since their rugged surface has a better grip over objects.
