Furniture Hardware Buying Guide

Furniture hardware refers to protectors, bumpers, and other items attached to furniture to make them safer, more accessible, and protect them from damaging or getting damaged by other household objects. They come in many varieties suited for all sizes of furniture. Using them can increase the life of delicate but attractive items, like glass tables and ornate picture frames. Getting the right kind of hardware can improve any home area, so here are a few tips for doing just that.

Protection from impacts

These can come in the form of edge and surface protectors. Edge protectors shield people from sharp edges, as on glass tables and steel counters. They can prevent some nasty scrapes if there is a young child in the house. Look for dense rubber foam bumpers that have been tested for indoor air pollution and are safe to use around children. It’s possible to get edge caps that stick on permanently using double-sided tape. For adult use around sharp edges, consider silicone bumpers--these tend to be transparent and don’t detract from the furniture’s appearance.

Keeping furniture whole

Some furniture requires more care while using, as they may contain delicate glass or crystal elements. Such surfaces can be kept free of scratches, marks, and discoloration using clear silicone or polyurethane bumpers attached to the bottoms of devices or heavy objects placed on these surfaces. It can also be used on drawers, doors, and doorknobs to dampen the sound of them being slammed and reduce possible damage to walls and other objects. They are available in various shapes (cylindrical, hemispherical, cuboidal) and sizes.

Clean and easy movement

One’s furniture needn’t always be easy to move. Furniture legs that move readily on carpeted floors might slip about on linoleum and tile, making them difficult to use and possibly damaging the flooring. Using anti-slip pads on the feet of such furniture can help keep them in place. Look for durable designs that combine felt and rubber foam layers: the felt protects the foot’s base, while the rubber provides traction to keep it in place.

Conversely, if the furniture sticks to the floor and resists easy movement, it could easily damage hardwood or laminated flooring if the user pulls too hard. Use thick, felt furniture coasters to keep scuffs and scratches away. They’re typically available in a range of sizes and shapes for use on both small and large objects.
