Top 12 Steel Angles

Construction and building require tons of materials, and steel is the most commonly used one. The primary reason behind the wide usage of steel in all forms is its low cost and extraordinary durability, making it the perfect choice for numerous applications. Steel angles are one such efficient form of steel used as support or a structural component for the construction of buildings, power and communication towers, bridges, warehouses, and heavy-duty equipment. If you look around you, steel angles are commonly used for bed frames, tables, chairs, and other everyday items.

Steel Angles Buying Guide

Steel angles are one of the three structural steel types and are formed by rolling steel through various dyes and rollers, giving it its signature L shape. The two portions of the steel angle called 'legs' are at a 90-degree angle and can either be of the same length or different length. The former type is known as equal legged angles, while the latter is unequal legged angles. But whether you want to buy steel angles for home repairs or industrial use, there are some properties you should consider.

Measure the Dimensions Properly

It is not always easy to get accurate measurements for steel angles as it can be a little complicated. You need to measure both the legs and their thickness correctly, especially if you require an unequal legged steel angle as the length varies from one steel angle to the other. The rounded corner of the steel angle, which is called the fillet, should also be measured. Often the size of the fillet radius is not provided but needs to be considered, primarily if it is being used at a 90-degree angle. In this case, a standard structural angle might not work.

Ensure the Steel Quality is Up to The Mark

When looking for steel angles, buyers will come across either hot-rolled steel or stainless steel. Hot-rolled steel is the rawest and most basic form, which is quite strong, but even stainless-steel angles make an excellent choice. Some stainless-steel angles are processed using cold-worked and hot drawn methods, which make it stronger. Whichever of the two you choose, the material should offer high strength and good resistance to heat, corrosion, chemicals, acids, and even atmospheric conditions.

Weight Capacity and Finish

The amount of weight a steel angle can hold is hardly ever specified, but the larger its size, the more stress and weight it can bear. It mainly depends on the buyer's purpose but if you require the steel angle for building, construction, or other heavy-duty applications, going with heavy steel angles is more suitable. As far as the steel angle's finish is concerned, mostly all come unpolished, but stainless steel will be a better choice if you require some shine or finish.
