Surgical Knives Buying Guide

Scalpels have been used in surgical procedures since the Bronze Age, though both medicine and material technology have come a long way since. Today, surgeons use these incredibly specialized, extremely sharp blades to perform a dizzying array of medical procedures that save thousands of lives every day. Here is a guide on buying surgical knives that meet one's requirements.

Reusable and single-use scalpels

The blade must always be changed between surgical procedures (as is the practice for all sharps in medicine). The entire scalpel may be disposed of and a new scalpel used instead. These are always individually packaged and radiation-sterilized for quick preparation and hygienic use. Their blades are typically stainless steel, and the handles are made of plastic.

Reusable scalpels have a single handle on which blades of different sizes and shapes can be attached. These blades can be individually wrapped and sold, or they can come in disposable retractable cartridges. These make replacing blades extremely quick and also decreases the chance of injuring oneself against a sharp. However, the handle is usually made of stainless steel (or other non-magnetic substances if intended to be used inside an MRI).

Special-purpose implements

Some surgical knives are used for specific purposes. These include skin grafting knives, which are differently shaped from most scalpels and use particular razor blades, tiny thin corneal knives used for precise corneal incisions, and long-necked septum knives for surgeries in the nasal passage. The choice of a knife depends on the intended purpose.

Scalpel size and convenience

Standard blades and handles come according to an agreed standard in the medical community, but smaller versions also see use. Disposable thumb scalpels, for instance, are sometimes used in place of reusable standard-sized scalpel blades as they reduce the risk of injuries when removing/replacing contaminated sharps.
