At such places, well pumps occupy the centre stage. There are two types of well pumps, first are the jet pumps. They are installed above wells, draw water using a suction created by Venturi effect. They have to be supplied with water from a separate source till the pump starts delivering water from well.
Uses of Jet pumps
Jet pump by construction is similar to a standard centrifugal pump. They are used to supply water to a sprinkler or garden irrigation & other DIY tasks on the farm. Jet pumps have limited lift capability & cannot lift water from deep pumps. They are not very efficient.
Shallow & deep jet well pumps
The jet pumps are suitable for wells with a depth of more than twenty-five feet to a hundred feet. Some include a tailpipe to avoid any dry run. It requires a foot valve to pour the liquid into the pump & depends on the atmospheric pressure to propel water to the surface. There are jet pumps designed for shallow wells which are less than twenty-five feet in depth. They may need a booster to maintain consistent water pressure & one-way check valve to ensure the pump is primed. The automatic stop feature prevents burning when the machine is overloaded.
Submersible well pumps
The other type is the submersible pumps which are completely submerged in water. They are multistage pumps, compact in construction and can draw water from deep wells. They are more efficient compared to Jet pumps. The depth of the well will determine the kind of pump you will need. In submersible pumps, a single pipe is attached to them which connects to the pressure tank. The wells with a depth of more than ninety feet to one hundred & forty feet need these kinds of well pumps.
Check the ratings
Well pumps are rated according to the gallons per minute. A house with three to four bedrooms needs eight to twelve GPM. To decide on the right size of the well pump required, you may add one GPM for every new appliance or fixture you have along the way. Getting an oversized well pump may increase the costs due to in-sufficient energy & also deliver a poor performance.
Criteria for making a proper choice
The selection of the right kind of submersible well pump should be based on the depth of well & quantity of water that needs to be pumped. The pressure tank dramatically reduces the pump's head. The pumping level that is the static water level needs to be considered. Some manufacturers provide a chart explaining the working of these well pumps, which will help you select the one that fits your needs.
