Top BuchHandlung 89 Alternatives and Similar Sites like buchhandlung89.de

BuchHandlung 89 is aimed at readers who want to understand life in East Germany and the years of the Berlin Wall. It sits inside the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen memorial, a former Stasi prison, and its subject areas match what people studying that site tend to look for: imprisonment and persecution, the inner German border, and the Peaceful Revolution. The name refers to 1989, the year of European liberation in the twentieth century, and keeps that date in view.

The stock ranges across scholarly series, biographies, illustrated volumes, children's and youth books, and graphic novels. Titles include Inhaftiert in Hohenschönhausen, a collection of testimony on political persecution from 1945 to 1989, and Staatssicherheit, a reader on the GDR secret police. Other shelves cover sport under socialism, opera in the GDR and the Nazi period. Audio and DVD titles appear with the printed books, and the shop also carries works on Stalin's Soviet Union, Russia, Korea, China and Cuba.

Foreign-language books in English, French and Italian sit in their own section, and there is a separate category for Polish recent history. The shop is tied to the Gedenkbibliothek zu Ehren der Opfer des Kommunismus / Stalinismus e.V., a registered association that supports the memorial library. Orders from new customers with delivery addresses outside Germany, Switzerland and Austria are paid in advance.
