Info About Dicksmith.com.au & Dicksmith Store

Dick Smith is an Australian retail chain that deals in consumer electronics and other products.

History

Established in 1968 by Dick Smith and his wife, the company was originally intended to fit and service car radio units. Unsatisfied with his small scale business running out of an abandoned car park, Dick Smith ventured into consumer electronics and started “Dick Smith Wholesale,” which now importers electrical components and electronics.

In the 1970s, Dick Smith also produced their own in-house clones of popular IBM, Apple and other personal computers such as Super-80, Dick Smith Cat, VZ-200 and so on. Dick Smith was acquired by Woolworths in Australia for a total price of around $25 million, following this they came out with innovative ideas for their stores like the “Dick Smith Powerhouse.” A powerhouse is, at its roots, a superstore with over 20,000 square feet of area and deals in almost all kinds of electronics and appliances.

Sponsorships

During its prime, Dick Stacy offered several high-grade sponsorships to sports teams. The Melbourne Stars of the T20 Big Bash cricket league was one of these. They also sponsored a number of tennis championships like the world tennis challenge, Hopman cup and so on. Dick Smith was also a proud sponsor of the National Rugby League.

Products

Dick Smith originally was intended to be an electronics store and has stayed true to its origins ever since their humble beginnings. Offering to ship throughout Australia and New Zealand, they were one of the largest electronic retail chains in Australia until their closure in 2016, followed by a subsequent reopening after being purchased by the Kogan group.

Dick Smith deals in all kinds of consumer electronics such as cameras, TVs, air-conditioning systems, home and garden equipment and anything else a customer would require to turn a house into a home.
