Authors receive 7% of the sale price of every book sold through Autorenwelt, on top of the royalties they earn from their publishers. The online bookshop was founded in 2015 by Sandra Uschtrin, Angelika Fuchs and Wilhelm Uschtrin, and it grows out of uschtrin.de, a site that has existed since 1998. The operating company, Autorenwelt GmbH, has its seat in Munich. Since 2020 it has been held in asset lock, so it owns itself and its profits go toward its purpose rather than to shareholders. Founder Sandra Uschtrin was named Bücherfrau des Jahres in 2019.

Signed editions form a large part of the stock. The shop offers hand-signed copies of new releases, both as pre-orders and as titles available immediately. When an author cannot sign a book in person, a hand-signed insert is included with the copy instead. New releases are only shipped from their publication date, and signing takes some time for the authors involved.

Themed sections cover Ukrainian authors, democracy and human rights, climate and award-winning crime novels. The shop also carries cookbooks, nature guides and fiction, such as the titles by Sally Lisa Starken and Tupoka Ogette. The company is a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Network Deutschland and banks with GLS Bank.
