History

The idea of an M&M first came to Forrest Mars, the son of Frank Mars, founder of Mars corporation. He witnessed British soldiers enjoying what seemed like hard chocolate candy with a soft center. Soon after Forrest applied for patents to protect his own work, he started developing the classic M&M, with his motto in mind “melts in your mouth, not in your hands.”

Throughout history, they have been known to have some rather uncommon marketing techniques. Most notable has to be the life-size glass cow covered in over 65,000 M&Ms with the small “m” pointed outwards in the 1990 New York Erie county fair. They have had multiple partnerships with NASCAR, and have appeared in various movies on the big screen such as Indiana Jones and Transformers among others. They have also partnered with the Olympics in 2012 as part of their marketing campaigns.

The original M&M was a small, hard shell coated candy with a chocolate center. This remains popular among faithful fans and newcomers alike due to its texture, the surprising jarring shift from a hard shell to an almost liquid-like chocolate center. 

Over the years, various other ones have been developed, the peanut M&Ms and the peanut butter M&Ms, not to be confused with the former. Dark chocolate M&Ms are a more recent addition along with minis, a smaller version, and Megas, almost 3 times as large as the original M&M. 

M&Ms remain the favourite child of the Mars Corporation and the ever-growing international popularity of the candy, owing to its signature taste and texture, keep M&Ms at the throne when it comes to chocolate snacks.
